Song of the Week: So Easy

The cover for the Fazerdaze album "Soft Power" which is kind of an out-of-focus blob of bluish & purplish & white colour on a dark background

I’ve been on a kick with singles and songs from my earliest days, but taking a detour this week as Fazerdaze has a new album out and a new single—”So Easy.”

Bandcamp tells me I bought my first Fazerdaze tunes—the ep Break!—in Sep of 2022. I bought Fazerdaze’s first album—Morningside—the same day. I can’t even remember how I stumbled upon the artist, but I think it may have been someone’s social media. That’s not terribly important, what is important is that Fazerdaze is now one of my favourite bands, and that’s reflected in my reaction to learning about the new album.

I pre-ordered Soft Power based on the band/person’s really solid body of work. There’s pretty much nothing that I’ve heard from Fazerdaze that I haven’t enjoyed.

Now Soft Power is a lot different than the songs on Break! and Morningside. Elsewhere I called it softer and more ethereal, but I think that’s only part of the story and only applies to some of the songs. There’s certainly more atmosphere—the songs are denser instrumentally—and there’s more electronica. The resonant guitar work is still there—something I truly dig—but Soft Power is quite a change from the jangle-esque version of post-punk power pop I feel in something like “Lucky Girl” or the thicker sound of “Overthink It.” Given my preference for pretty frothy alt-pop, Fazerdaze’s previous work seemed a no-brainer, but I’ve gone through Soft Power more than a few times now and I really enjoy it. I think “So Easy” is a great example of the new Fazerdaze sound, and so if you dig it, go check out the album. My particular favourites are “Cherry Pie” and “City Glitter,” very different songs but I think both highlight Fazerdaze’s signatures.

Make sure you support the acts you really enjoy, especially with Spotify making it even more difficult for most artists to make a decent living. If you want more good music—or any creative products—support the artist. If you don’t, it’s going away.
