Song of the Day: The Beat Goes On/Switchin’ to Glide
October 13, 2024
Music has been a really important part of my life. As a child, my mom got me in piano classes and viola classes. Early in high school I took saxophone in music class. But I was never a musician. I was—however—a great lover of music. It remains an essential part of my life, from balancing out podcasts on my commute, to filling the background with atmosphere when I write.
So I’m going to share some of the most important pieces of music in my life with you. . . Whether you like it or not.
Today it’s the Kings, The Beat Goes On/Switchin’ to Glide.
My memories of high school are . . . shaky. I’m pretty sure I saw this group in concert, and I think it was actually at our high school. That seems really weird to me, so I am constantly questioning if that really happened. I also have a memory of a Spoons concert at the high school as well. Were they the same? Am I mis-remembering? Did I even see them in concert?
Whatever the case, this was one of the singles I bought back when we all still used turntables and you’d buy singles (two sides, A- and B-, with A-side usually being the ‘hit’ single). I don’t think it was my first single, but that’s something I can explore deeper, later. This was apparently two songs that were somehow fused into one for the radio and—IIRC—the single.
Anyway, it’s one of those 60’s influenced, power pop-style tunes that came out in the early 1980s that weren’t necessarily alternative, but reflected a genre I still dig.
Enjoy!
